So, last night I got home from work at 7. The boys got into costume, and we hit the neighborhood.
And with two exceptions, nobody was home. (Or, I was told today, one group was home, but they didn't hear the doorbell. Fishy!) We met our new next-door-neighbors-once-removed as they were leaving, and I decided immediately that we would heart them forever because they very sweetly and excitedly got out of their car when they saw us in their driveway and fixed the YP right up before heading out.
As we were coming back from our sixth darkened home, we saw some other neighbors getting back from dinner, and they were amused to see the YP and NYAB decked out.
Well. Two houses. That wouldn't do, no, not for a second. So while NYAB finished up his work, I packed the kid into the car and drove him over to one of the few new housing developments around here that doesn't have a guardpost at the front gate and he made quite the haul.
And then we went to the grocery store and to McDonald's and he was tickled to death that he got to go rambling around these mundane places in his costume, and he sang the Batman theme as loudly as he could.
But I think he definitely got the picture that next year he needs to get invited for sugar-panhandling in the high-rent district by some of his little Gated Community Friends from school. Especially when you see what he got from one household:

Yes. Top ramen. What you don't see is that it is in a ziploc with a packet of pretzels on the other side, so clearly someone put some thought into this and it wasn't just, "Oh, I ran out of candy..." or "Hey, I'm a starving college student and this is all I've got..." I just laughed and laughed when I saw it, whereas the YP was just very confused. I said, "Do you want to eat that first?" And he looked at it dubiously and said he didn't think he wanted to eat it AT ALL. Instead, he opted for the traditional Tootsie Roll:
I am not sure I agree with his choice, though at least that did leave the KitKats for me and a Reese's cup for NYAB. Heh.

Beats this dynamic duo. :)

I so wish I lived near you. It would have made my night to see YP in his costume stalking the grocery aisles singing the Batman theme.
Ramen, eh? I think I know what I'm giving out next year....
